About the Posse

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Posse is made up of up to 24 reserve officers and 1 full-time police officer. Each officer must supply their own horse, tack, boarding, feed, truck and trailer.

Posse Activation

The Sheriff’s Posse is activated by special order to support the activities of other Sheriff department units, city police departments and the University of Notre Dame police department.

This includes community events, athletic events, and police operations to provide crowd control and patrol. The posse also provides search and rescue operations covering large geographical areas.
